Solis, a senior and two-year captain, won his second Section 1 Small School title at the championships in February after falling short in the semifinals last season. He also won the title as a sophomore.

He had suffered a fractured foot two weeks before the sectional tournament in his junior year, so Solis relished winning the title as a senior.

“It did make it a lot sweeter, because I feel like I was the underdog,” Solis said. “Having lost the year before, people didn’t really think I could make it my senior year.”

Doctors cleared Solis to wrestle in last year’s tournament and he finished in third place. That wasn’t good enough for the dedicated wrestler.

“I knew I had to bounce back from that and make sure I accomplished my goal of winning section,” Solis said. “It made it 20 times better winning it my senior year than sophomore year, because I wanted to go out knowing that I was the best. It made it a lot better.”

Solis took a few months off to let the injury heal on its own, and his patience was rewarded with another title.

Westlake head coach Joe Bucello took over the program four years ago when Solis was a freshman. In that time, he never heard Solis complain, never saw him get in trouble. Bucello said the words “blue collar” were the best way to describe him.

So Bucello, too, was filled with joy when Solis took home his second title.

“It was probably my proudest moment as a coach so far, just because of that bad taste that I know was left in his mouth from last year,” Bucello said. “You could just see the disappointment on his face when he came up short, so for him to be able to battle back and complete his goals was an amazing accomplishment.”

True to his personality, Solis gave much of the credit for his win to his coach.

“Whatever my coach tells me to do, I follow, because I know he wants to make me a better wrestler,” Solis said. “If I listen to him, I would become that wrestler that I want to become.”
