The team came back from a first-round overtime loss to finish as runner-up in the Morris Rugby 2013 Junior Jersey Cup on May 19. Aspetuck Valley drew Union, N.J., to a 5-5 tie in regulation, but lost in penalty kicks into the consolation bracket of the double elimination tournament.

In its second match, Aspetuck Valley defeated Old Greenwich, 17-5, to make it to the championship series. Aspetuck got a bit of revenge with a 22-0 victory over Union in the first game of the championship round, but lost 17-0 to finish as runner-up.

Aspetuck’s defense led the way most of the day, with solid play from Redding’s William Carello, Ridgefield’s Peter Murray and Ben van der Merwe of Westport. Winger Michael McCann of Newtown also made a big tackle in the Old Greenwich match to preserve the lead. On offense, Aspetuck Valley was led by a front line of Jacob Robb of Wilton and Ridgefielders Nate Phelps, George Edwards and Andrew Tregurtha.

The Aspetuck Valley Rugby Football Club draws players from Ridgefield, Redding, Weston, Easton, Wilton, Newtown, Bethel, Fairfield and Westport. Boy’s teams are fielded at the U11, U13, U15 and high school level.  More information is available at the team’s website.
