Organizers Plan To Run New York Marathon Despite Sandy

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – The ING New York City Marathon will go on as scheduled on Sunday despite the damage caused to the city by Hurricane Sandy, the New York Road Runners said.

The NYRR, which puts on the race, said it will keep its options open as race day nears. The city is recovering from devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy on Monday.

“This is a very challenging time for the people and City of New York,’’ the NYRR said on its website. “The City is rightfully focused on assessment, restoration and recovery. At NYRR, we stand with our City agency partners and support their efforts. The Marathon has always been a special day for New Yorkers as a symbol of the vitality and resiliency of this City. NYRR continues to move ahead with its planning and preparation.”

Many Fairfield County runners have been making plans and training for the 26.2 mile, which begins in Staten Island. But there are thousands of runners from the United States and abroad also planning to travel to New York. Many hotels hit by the storm will not be able to accommodate runners.

“We will keep all options open with regard to making any accommodations and adjustments necessary to race day and race weekend events," the organization said in its statement. "We will provide an update and more detail as information becomes available.”
