Promising Season Looms For Weston Basketball

WESTON, Conn. – Weston’s boys basketball team went 13-10 last season with its first winning record since 2007. This year’s squad might be even better.

The Trojans, who opened with a 78-60 victory Monday over New Fairfield, have an inside-outside balance that will be hard to defend. In the opener, Asher Lee-Tyson and Charlie DiPasquale combined for 32 points as mostly perimeter players. Grant Limone, Troy Flynn and Pascal Arvoy combined for 26 points, with most coming from the paint.

“We have a lot of experience returning,’’ said DiPasquale, the captain and the Trojans’ only senior. “Our starting lineup got a lot of playing time last year when we got pretty far, one of the best seasons we’ve ever had. We’ve been working out all summer and fall, and we’re ready to go. We have some sophomores who are ready to step up, too.”

Weston got off to a fast start last season when it won six of its first seven games. But injuries mounted, and the Trojans lost seven of their next nine. Weston rallied for four straight wins, including a 62-59 win over South-West Conference champion Immaculate. Weston won its first game in the state tournament before it was eliminated by top-seeded Enfield.

“Last year was a growing process for everybody,’’ said coach Mike Hvizdo, who is in his second year. “When we have injuries, guys have to step up. It’s an opportunity for everybody to get more playing time. One of our goals this year is to keep a little bit more of an even keel, and we’re trying to become a little deeper and play a few more guys. We’ll need guys to step up early.”

Weston has a big holes to fill after the graduations of guard Max Molinsky (13.7 points per game last year) and Lyle Mitchell (10.3 points, 11.7 rebounds). Evan Blitzer (9.1 points per game) also graduated.

DiPasquale (8.7 points per game last year) saw a lot of playing time, along with Asher Lee-Tyson, Ethan Lee-Tyson, Flynn and Limone.

In the opening win over New Fairfield, Asher Lee-Tyson hit several big shots when the Rebels tried to make a run. He also had three assists and three steals. DiPasquale buried three three-pointers while Flynn and Arvoy had six rebounds apiece.

“I think we are a little bit more balanced than we were last year,’’ Hvizdo said. “That’s what we’re looking for.”

Weston will get a better gauge of how it stacks up in January, when it plays league powers Notre Dame of Fairfield and Kolbe-Cathedral. But it’s an encouraging start, and the Trojans might be in the thick of the league title chase.
