Weston Football Full Of Preseason Promise

WESTON, Conn. – Weston High School’s football team hopes to keep last year's momentum going when it returns to the field on September 15.

The Trojans finished 7-3 last year, won five of its last six games and narrowly missed making the state playoffs. Coach Joe Lato won't predict how many games Weston will win this season, but says his teams are known for playing hard for 48 minutes.

“I expect the same thing out of the kids every year,’’ said Lato, who is beginning his seventh year. “They’re going to be prepared, they’re going to work hard and they’re going to get better every day. Whatever that means as far as a record, we’ll find out at the end of the year. The goal is to be the best we can be.”

Quarterback Tyler Hassett returns to lead the team this year. He's a three-year starter who passed for 977 yards and six touchdowns last year, and rushed for 569 more with eight touchdowns. He’ll be joined in the backfield by Justin Schaffer, Zack Cannon, Aaron Pomerance and Sam Panton.

“I like our mix offensively,’’ Lato said. “In our scrimmages we’ve shown an ability to make big plays. I have all the confidence in the world in them.”

Senior Jack Hamilton will play both ways and Eric Dammen-Brower is one of the league’s top linebackers.

Weston’s only losses last year were to the Big 3 of the SWC (South-West Conference), Pomperaug, Newtown and Masuk. Newtown is not on the schedule this year and if everything breaks right for the Trojans, they hope to be chasing a state tournament berth in late November. Weston opens on Sept. 15 against Notre Dame of Fairfield. Weston’s schedule is online.

“The biggest team on the schedule is Weston,’’ Lato said. “Our competition is ourselves. I look at how we get better, how can we move the ball, how can we defend. All I know is we have Notre Dame in Week 1.”
