I agree that correlation does not not equal causation; I'm sure there are so, so many factors that go into the equation. The study I quoted in my original post about gun sales soaring while gun violence drop says something similar; all studies will as causation is so very difficult to determine 100%. (I have my Bachelor's in Psychology, in school it was drilled into our heads that correlation does not equal causation.) But, like you said, it is suggestive. As the details develop, it appears this man actually tried to purchase a weapon earlier this week, but failed. That means our gun control policies are working. He couldn't get the gun he wanted to fulfill his plan - so he had to turn to theft, stealing his mother's legally obtained weapons. Even if gun control laws are tightened (though it looks like they are working just fine), there will always be theft of guns or criminals obtaining them elsewhere, just as this young man did. Guns are here, there will be no ridding them from violent hands. Also, I heard some reports that the young man may have been Autistic and had personality disorders. This furthers the points in my original post that this is not a gun issue, but a mental illness issue. Mental illness, like guns, will always be with us. I am in no way saying that autistic people are violent or anything at all like that. First an foremost, it is a terrible tragedy that caused this children not to return to their warm beds at night; before making political comments, we should all be respectful of the mourning these families are going through. Second, gun control is not the answer here. This was a mentally deranged individual that caused this to happen, not a lack of gun laws. These guns were legally bought and registered by the boy's mother - not him. He stole these guns, just as he'd be able to do even if gun laws were tighter. I realize it's cliché to say, but if we outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns. Further, even if we do outlaw guns, a person this reprehensible will always find a way to commit his horrendous plan. Either he'll apprehend weapons another way, or he'll use different weapons. In China, today, 22 children were stabbed with knives. Unfortunately, evil is, and will always be, around - with or without guns. If anything, we should increase awareness about mental illness and start paying attention to the warning signs. We should also teach more gun safety courses to encourage people to arm and protect themselves safely. The key there is safely. I firmly believe if more sane, responsible adults had guns, gun violence would go down. (In fact, studies have shown that when gun sales increase, violence decreases.) Like I said, evil and mental illness will always be around. The best solution is not gun control, but rather, education on both mental illness and how to best protect ourselves and our loved ones, especially our children.
