Physical Therapy Director At Westport's Elite Health Services Helps Runners

WESTPORT, Conn. -- Matt Silvaggio, of Elite Health Services in Westport, is helping to put runners back on track. He also puts them back on treadmills, trails, roads, sand and anywhere else where runners want to rack up miles.

Silvaggio, director of physical therapy and sports performance at EHS, 162 Kings Highway N., Westport, has spent the past few years developing an evidence-informed evaluation system designed for runners of all levels. The goal is to improve efficiency through the diagnosis of specific running-related dysfunctions.

Coupled with an in-depth video analysis and a comprehensive running-specific physical assessment, Silvaggio and his team work with clients to establish goals and construct an individualized program that maximizes efficiency and reduces risk of injury.

“The biggest thing for runners is getting their mechanics right,’’ said Silvaggio, a multi-sport athlete who has worked at EHS since 2010.

Silvaggio’s video analysis breaks down a runner’s mechanics, looking at 12 different characteristics. Each characteristic contributes to the amount of energy that is required with each stride, ultimately dictating the efficiency of oxygen and glucose utilization.

After explaining his findings, Silvaggio establishes drills that allow runners to begin making gradual adaptations to their gait patterns.

The physical assessment helps determine which areas of the runner’s mobility, strength and endurance are contributing to the inefficiencies in their running mechanics.

Silvaggio starts with a postural assessment and follows with an in-depth investigation of key areas of flexibility, strength and endurance through a series of dynamic and static tests.

Donald Vasta, a lifelong runner from Stamford, developed knee and hamstring pain after running 10 marathons in a six-year period. He visited nearly a dozen health care providers before turning to Silvaggio and EHS.

“From the first visit I could tell that these guys were different,’’ Vasta said. “They really took a holistic view of my problems. Matt went over me from stem to stern, finding and resolving problems.”

Silvaggio analyzes the data and creates a holistic picture of a runner’s individual needs. He then creates a schedule that helps the runner achieve his or her goals.
