Chapel School Student Raises Awareness of Endangered Animals

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. -- One student’s passion for the plight of endangered animals inspired her to take action, say Bronxville school officials.

Katie, a second-grader at the Chapel School in Bronxville, sold cookies and lemonade to raise money to buy books on endangered animals for the school's library.

Many students at the Chapel School to participate in community service projects during the school year, they said.

The school collects offerings during its weekly Chapel Service and donates them to Eastchester Community Action Program, a local agency in Tuckahoe providing food and other essentials to local families in need; Sacred Heart Soup Kitchen; and Furniture Sharehouse, which provides free furniture to economically disadvantaged individuals and families living in Westchester.

Katie took those giving lessons a step further.

The second-grader, who the school only identified by her first name, opened up a cookie and lemonade stand over the summer and donated the proceeds to the school’s library.

During first grade, she had worked on a project about endangered animals and developed a deep love of the subject.

With the help of school librarian Sharon Peterson, Katie’s donation was used to purchase books on endangered animals.

On Friday, Nov. 20, Katie presented her story -- and illustrated it with pictures on a poster board -- to her classmates.

“I want other people to know about these animals and hopefully we can stop them from becoming extinct,” she said.

The Chapel School is located at 172 White Plains Road, Bronxville.
