Schindel is the founder of Weston Woods Studios, a pioneer in the field of children’s book animation. The award is given to an individual nominated by the Weston community at large and elected by the Board of WestonArts for dedication and devotion to promoting the arts in Weston, according to a press release.

The following comes from Schindel, who described his life’s work in 2006:

“Since 1953 my life’s work has been devoted to connecting children to the wonderful world of classic children’s picture books. I, and the company I founded, Weston Woods Studios, has done this by adapting the best in children’s literature into the audiovisual media so that children all over the world could develop a lifelong love of books and reading.

“Since selling Weston Woods Studios to Scholastic Inc. in 1996, I have continued my commitment to this field through the auspices of my non-profit foundation. The Weston Woods Institute is committed to continuing to find effective means of communication to reach young children as storytelling evolves into the 21st Century and beyond.

“For the most part, my work in this field, first through Weston Woods Studios, Inc. and now through the Weston Woods Institute and my personal foundation, has been conducted at my home and properties at 389 Newtown Turnpike in Weston. Much to my surprise, the Weston Woods properties have evolved to become what has been described in an article in the NY Times as ‘one of the world’s capitals of children’s literature.’”
