• The state Department of Education released the results from the first-ever standardized Smarter Balanced Assessment, which was taken in the spring by students across Connecticut. Fewer than 40 percent of students statewide earned a passing grade in math, while 55.4 percent made the grade in English language arts on the controversial new tests. • Police found a bullet hole and blood in one of the vehicles belonging to Jeffrey and Jeanette Navin, a couple from Easton who have not been seen since Aug. 4. Police have also searched landfills as part of the investigation.  

• The new school year began for students in many towns, including Danbury, Ridgefield, WestportRedding and Easton, as well as Weston, New Canaan and Bridgeport. Students in Stamford head back on Monday.

• A Metro-North train was able to stop in time and not hit a person who was on the tracks near the Darien station on Friday morning. It is not clear why the person, who was not hurt, was on the tracks.  

• John Sadowski, a 26-year-old dance teacher from Fairfield, has pleaded guilty to fourth-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to children for exchanging hundreds of sexual explicit text messages with one of his teenage students and inappropriately touching the girl.

• Interest has surged in a Greenwich home for sale for $54 million that was once owned by Donald Trump as he makes his way to the top of polls in the presidential race.

• Two construction workers were injured at the Bedford Square construction site in downtown Westport when their scaffolding collapsed.

• A too-tall box truck slammed into the Metro-North overpass in the heart of South Norwalk on Friday.

• The City of Bridgeport held a ground-breaking ceremony for a new $106 million high school to replace the aging 90-year-old Harding High. Many support naming the building for President Barack Obama when it is completed. 

• The family who founded the Canine Co. of Wilton is remembering how the company was borne from the tragedy of losing a pet. 

• A pharmacy technician was arrested on charges of stealing $5,000 in prescription drugs from a Stamford CVS.
