Value Penguin sourced all of its data from FBI violent and property crime statistics from 2012. Violent crimes were given a heavier weight (90 percent) versus property crimes (10 percent) to arrive at an overall "crime score." The lower the crime score, the safer the municipality.
Easton was ranked second overall, and the top city in the Nutmeg State with a population under 20,000.
Easton's "crime score" of 53 was lower than all other communities with the exception of Ridgefield, which clocked in with a score of 39.
Easton's "crime score" is 84 percent lower than the state average of 336. The community boasts just 500 citizens per police officer.
Redding wasn't far behind, ranking fifth with an overall "crime score" of 64, 81 percent below the state average.
Weston was ranked sixth overall with a "crime score" of 66.
Fairfield County communities owned all five of the top spots with Ridgefield taking the top spot, and Darien and Wilton ranking third and fourth, respectively.

- No. 8: New Canaan
- No. 9: Greenwich
- No. 24: Westport
- No. 48: Fairfield
- No. 54: Danbury
- No. 71: Stamford
- No. 77: Norwalk
- No 87: Bridgeport
The least safest communities were New Haven and Hartford with crime scores of 1,798 and 1,622, respectively.
