Stamford Company Needs Workers Despite Economy

If you’re looking for a job, you might start with Stamford- based Pitney Bowes. The company usually has about 450 openings nationwide, but most, including the white collar positions, are not in this area, Matthew Broder, vice-president of external communications, says.

“There is no uptick in white collar jobs in Connecticut and the Northeast,” Broder says of company openings.

Most of Pitney Bowes’ hires are outsourced to work in the mailrooms and administration with other companies, and some of these are local. And since the contracts are often temporary, there are frequent openings, Broder says.

However, the company was not immune to the recession and needed to consolidate. Part of that included shedding 10 percent of personnel globally, Broder says.

“We definitely saw curtailments in hiring,” he says.

Although there are jobs available at Pitney Bowes now, Broder expects “no dramatic change” in the employment picture in the next six months.

In its 90th year, Pitney Bowes is a $5.6 billion company that employs 33,000 people worldwide, including 22,000 in the United States, the company website says. The company provides software, hardware and services to integrate physical and digital communications.
