WESTON, Conn. — Readers of The Weston-Redding-Easton Daily Voice are speaking out on Facebook about a proposal that would ban drivers from smoking in cars carrying children 6 and younger.

"What's the magic in age 6? Why just in cars?" reader Julia Keisman Pemberton wrote. "Exposing children to second hand smoke is poison. That said, this is a well intended but bad piece of legislation."

"I agree with the comment above, but am so glad to see movement in this direction!" reader Jennifer H. Roh wrote.

The bill, HB 5380, is still being debated in Hartford.

"While I agree that the danger of second hand smoke is obvious...Government does NOT belong in our homes (private cars)," reader Nancy Bree Babyak wrote. "Government can not legislate stupidity - nor should it. The Chinese Govt legislates how many children a couple can have. Once govt is granted private access there is NO turning back. Be careful what you wish for."

The proposed smoking ban is not the only bill in Hartford that Facebook readers are reacting to. A proposal to bring tolls back to Connecticut highways drew this response from reader Kathy Marsh:

"Thinking traffic may get worse... Friday night madness already on summer Friday's... much thought should be given on a work around," Marsh wrote.

You should fasten your seat belt and put your child in a car seat; both have been proven to save lives. But telling people to smoke/not smoke in their cars is crossing the line. It's the same as telling them what or not to do in the privacy of their homes as was stated in the article.

Best case scenario, at least roll the windows down so the child doesn't inhale the 2nd hand smoke as it's been proven to be hazardous to everyone's health.

Agree. There are some things I know I SHOULD do; but I deeply resent being told that I HAVE to do them by the government. I would never ride my motorcycle without a helmet; but I give Connecticut a lot of credit for not telling me I HAVE to wear one.

Let's see: You must buckle your seat belt; you must put your child in a car seat. Now it is proposed that you must NOT smoke in your own car with a child present. A hyphenated harridan asks "Why just in cars?" She would no doubt prefer the cops to check if there are ashtrays in your house while they are searching for assault rifles on their weekly confiscation run.
The federal government is, by no means, the only thief of our liberties. Lock and load. They are coming, if we let them. Is second hand gun smoke injurious to children?
