Locals Take Marine Art to Library

If you take a trip to the library’s lower level this month, you might suddenly feel as if you’re on the open ocean. That’s because the library’s art gallery is presenting its Marine Art Exhibit, featuring work by local artists, including Darien native Peter Arguimbau, who now lives in Greenwich, and Anne Jayson, of Rowayton.  All artists are represented by either Darien’s The Geary Gallery or Rowayton’s Questler Gallery. The exhibit runs through June 11.

Most of the artworks on display are oil paintings, featuring seascapes, boats races and marine life. Arguimbau, who grinds his own pigments to make hand-made paint, created  work that includes scenes from around Darien's coastline. Jayson contributed some paintings as well, but also included a few "sailor's valentines." These are octagonal wooden boxes with designs made mostly from seashells. The practice dates back to the 1800s, and were orignially given as gifts to loved ones by sailors returning from long voyages.
