POUND RIDGE, N.Y. The Pound Ridge Lions Club, in conjunction with several other Lions Clubs in northern Westchester County, has awarded its annual nursing scholarship to an emergency department technician at Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco.
The scholarship was presented to Kevin Leonaggeo, who joined Northern Westchester Hospital in 2008 and has been a technician in the Mary & David Boies Emergency Department since September 2010.
Winning the scholarship was a very big accomplishment for me, Leonaggeo said. I start the WCC nursing program in September and I couldn't be more excited to continue my career and growth in the field of nursing.
Initially designed as a local scholarship for graduating high school students who would pursue a nursing education, the Lions Club Nursing Scholarship initiative was expanded seven years ago to include a $3,000 award to enable that same education for a local health care practitioner from Northern Westchester Hospital or Mount Kisco Medical Group. Besides Pound Ridge, Lions Clubs from Armonk, Bedford Hills, Bedford Village and Mount Kisco participate. The scholarship is awarded in two annual $1,500 installments.
The scholarship committee included co-chairs Linda DiLisio of the Mount Kisco Lions Club and Raymond Infarinato of the Bedford Village Lions Club, as well as Lauraine Szekely, chief nursing officer at Northern Westchester Hospital, Kerry Flynn-Barrett, vice president of human resources at Northern Westchester Hospital, and Leslie Jackson, director of patient care services for the Mount Kisco Medical Group.
What began as an effort to address the current and projected nursing shortage has evolved into wonderful and close community collaboration with NWH and MKMG, and the Lions clubs of Armonk, Bedford Hills, Bedford Village, Mount Kisco and Pound Ridge, Infarinato said.
