EASTON, Conn. – Easton Police Capt. Richard Doyle, the town’s emergency management director, has this advice for residents gearing up for Hurricane Sandy: “Have a supply of water and batteries, charge your cell phones, stay sheltered as the storm occurs and don’t move about, which creates problems for responders.”
The hurricane, which the Weather Channel called “a monster threat to the East coast,” is moving towards the East coast after killing at least 31 people in the Caribbean, according to a Reuters report. It may reach Southern Connecticut on Monday. Doyle said his department checked all generators, which are fueled up, and other equipment. It also tested the emergency notification system that alerts residents about severe storms. The shelter-supply trailer has been moved to Helen Keller Middle School, the location of town’s primary shelter. The department also met with the Senior Center to check on the location of senior shut-ins.
“We work with the Fire Department and EMS and if the hurricane hits we’ll shut down impassable roads and work with public works to clear them,” Doyle said. “UI [United Illuminating] has two liaisons that are assigned here and will act on our request to clear lines and restore power.”
