Northeast DC resident Deion Hinnant, who was hospitalized with serious injuries after the officer-involved shooting, was charged with assault and weapon offenses following an incident Monday night.
According to police, shortly before 9 p.m. on April 1, investigators from the Violent Crime Suppression Division’s Robbery Suppression Unit were in the 2100 block of Bladensburg Road NE, when they spotted an altercation.
The officers got out of their cruiser and attempted to stop Hinnant, who was in possession of a weapon, they said. He began running and ignored the investigators' commands to stop and show his hands.
Police say that Hinnant did not comply and "appeared to turn towards the investigators. At that time, an MPD investigator discharged their firearm multiple times, striking the man."
Hinnant was treated by officers until DC Fire and EMS personnel arrived to rush him to an area hospital with serious injuries. A weapon was recovered at the scene following the shooting.
The 31-year-old Hinnant was charged with:
- Assault on a police officer;
- Carrying a pistol without a license;
- Possession of an unregistered firearm;
- Possession of unregistered ammunition;
- Possession with intent to distribute a controlled substances.
The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, and body-worn camera footage of the shooting is expected to be released at a later date.
