The Redding Board of Education appointed Tracy Edwards as the school’s new assistant principal in a special meeting last month, Region 9 administration announced in a statement.
“Ms. Edwards will be a boon to Redding Elementary School,” Superintendent Bernard Josefsberg said in a press release.
Edwards has been a special education teacher at Samuel Staples since 2008. Two years ago, she spearheaded a program for autistic students, working with paraprofessionals and outside consultants to develop a new curriculum.
She holds master’s degrees from the University of Connecticut and Manhattanville College, and earned her sixth-year degree in Educational Leadership at UConn last month. Edwards was chosen from a pool of more than 120 applicants by central office administrators and the Board of Education search committee before being unanimously approved May 27.
“Tracy Edwards immediately impresses as a professional with the rare combination of characteristics: dedication, sensitivity, inquiring mind and a high intelligence along with high expectations, work ethic and the knowledge and ability to identify and facilitate reflective strategies for students, staff and families,” one of her references wrote to the school board.
Edwards will take the spot previously held by Carrie Wessman Huber. Huber moved from assistant principal to acting principal at the beginning of the school year, with the promotion of Stephanie Pierson Ugol to central office. The school board picked her to take the job permanently in April.
