But as snow days quickly run out for many Fairfield County school districts, Weston schools do not have much to panic about yet.
According to Philip Schaefer, a Board of Education trustee, the district has used only two of its nine allotted snow days.
"The problem we have is with the Merritt Parkway, that seems to be the dividing line for temperature gradients," Schaefer said when asked why Weston has such a high number of allotted snow days. "If there is a delayed opening in Westport, we might have a day off due to snow and ice."
Because of Weston's geographical location, the district made it a priority to allot an appropriate amount of snow days.
"Between snow, tropical storms and hurricanes, we've had use a lot of snow days in the past. That was making [the school year] run into the last week of June," Schaefer said.
Because of travel plans for families and student internships, which begin after the school year, the district wanted to make sure the school year didn't run as late as it has in the past.
By starting the school year earlier than normal, Schaefer said, Weston schools could use all nine of its snow days and still end on time.
According to the Weston Public Schools website, the projected last day of school is June 10. For each snow day used, a day will be added to the end of the year, Schaefer said.
"Worst comes to worst, if we don't use all the days, we end school earlier," he added.
