FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. University of Connecticut mens basketball coach Jim Calhoun is expected to announce his retirement Thursday.
Multiple news outlets reported the news Wednesday night. A press conference was planned for 2 p.m. Thursday.
Former player Kevin Ollie, an assistant to Calhoun, is expected to replace him.
Calhoun, 70, won three NCAA championships since taking over as coach of the Huskies in 1986. He has been beset by health issues in recent years, however. He suffered a fractured hip last month.
Calhoun has won 873 games in 40 years as an NCAA Division I mens basketball coach. He started his career at his alma mater, Northeastern, in Boston. Four of his UConn teams reached the NCAA's Final Four, and the Huskies won titles in 1999, 2004 and 2011.
