WESTON, Conn. – Weston High won a cross country state championship in 2009, when the current group of seniors were untested freshmen. On Saturday, seniors Noah Krassin, David Stankiewicz and Will Glaser helped the Trojans win their fourth title under coach Marty Ogden.
The Trojans won with 68 points, easily outdistancing runner-up Rocky Hill. James Murphy’s sixth-place finish led the Trojans. Krassin was 11th, followed by Glaser (14th), Stankiewicz (16th) and Sam Augusty (21st). Matthew Proctor and Henry Morris rounded out Weston’s lineup. Only 62 seconds separated Weston’s runners.
“The best thing about coaching is to watch these runners grow and develop over the years,’’ Ogden said. “It’s been a great to see these kids who were part of that last team continue to improve and win their own title. They worked hard for it and deserved it.”
Weston has had strong teams in recent years, but injuries cropped up at inopportune times that cost the Trojans. This year’s team had a disappointing third-place finish at the South-West Conference meet, but the runners bounced back with a strong performance Saturday.
“I think the league meet was my fault,’’ Ogden said. “Our workouts were too hard leading up to the race. But I think those workouts paid off for us at the class meet, and I’m hoping they pay off at the State Open on Friday.”
Even after the disappointing league race, Ogden believed his runners would do well at the state meet.
“I just had a feeling they’d step up at the right time,’’ he said. “This was one of those season where things went right. I had a feeling they would run well.”
Now Weston will try for a strong performance in the State Open. The top six at the Open make the New England Championships, something Weston has never done.
"As a coach, my goal is to win the State Open,’’ Ogden said. “I don’t care too much about the size of the school. I want to see how good we are in the entire state. We have a shot to get in the Top 10, and if everything breaks right for us, who knows how high well finish.”
