Weston Football Off To Fast Start

WESTON, Conn. — After a scoreless first quarter, the Weston Trojans picked up the pace en route to a 46-18 shellacking of Notre Dame of Fairfield in their football season-opener Saturday.

Senior quarterback Tyler Hassett threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more, demonstrating the multifaceted offense the Trojans hope will propel them to a successful season.

“Tyler can do it all — he can run the option and throw,” said head coach Joe Lato. “He spread the ball around pretty nice.”

The most spectacular touchdown came on the last play of the first half, when Weston took possession after a Lancers punt with 16 seconds to play. The Trojans completed a long pass, called a time out and scored on an 18-yard pass from Hassett to junior Erik Dammen-Brower as time ran out.

“I was impressed on that drive,” Lato said. “Usually, we do a two-minute drill, but the kids executed that extra-fast.”

Dammen-Brower caught two touchdown passes and senior Justin Schaffer caught another. Senior Zach Cannon scored the team’s first touchdown on an 8-yard run.

Notre Dame quarterback Glody Tumba ran the ball well, but had trouble with the passing attack. The Trojans intercepted two passes that led to scores. They also recovered two fumbles.

“I’m glad we could pick up the defense a little bit,” Lato said. “We hung in, eventually got it going, and everyone stepped up and did their part.”

The Trojans play at noon next Saturday at Oxford. Their next home game is at 1 p.m. Oct. 6 against Immaculate.
