Westport Weston Water Rats Shine At Long Course Championships

WESTPORT, Conn. – Thirty of the Westport Weston Family Y Water Rat swimmers competed in the Connecticut Long Course Age Group Championships at Wesleyan University in Middletown.

Seven of the participants beat out previous Water Rat records, some that had been held as long as 15 years.

Record breakers included Esme Hunter, 12, in the 50-meter, 100-meter and 200-meter backstrokes; Nathan Wang, 12, in the 50-meter and 100-meter breaststrokes; Dashiell Hunter, 13, in the 200-meter breaststroke; and Tucker Ballou, 10, in the 50-meter butterfly. Wang also won first place in all three of the breaststroke events in which he competed.

In the 10 and Under Boys division, the relay team of Sean Rogers, Ballou, Enzo Valadares and Riley Twiss were Age Group Champions in the 200- and 400-medley relays. Rogers won the high-point award in the 400-meter freestyle, 200-meter freestyle and 200-meter individual medley.

Many swimmers from the Water Rat Age Group team traveled to compete in the Eastern Zone Championship, in Richmond, Va. The championship is the highest level of competition for Age Group swimmers. 

The Water Rat representatives will be Lily Cumello, Marissa Healy, Ballou, E. Hunter, D. Hunter, Jack Rogers, S. Rogers, Olivia Utter and Wang. Coaches are Betsy Matheney and Mark Sedlak.
