15 Months After Maryland Girl, 14, Was Killed In DC, Her Case Takes A Major Turn: Police
For 15 months, the killing of a 14-year-old Maryland girl went without an arrest.
That changed on Wednesday, Aug. 26, when DC police arrested a 17-year-old boy in connection with the death of Clinton resident Zytina Mason-Brown, who was shot on Benning Road NE in Washington in May 2025.
Mason-Brown was just 14 when officers were called to the 1700 block of Benning Road NE at approximately 5:08 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21, 2025.
They found the teenager unconscious and not breathing with a critical gunshot wound.

Shortly before 2 a.m. on Monday, July 27, firefighters were called to a home in the 8400 block of Wooddy Road in Port Tobacco, where a fire had broken out inside the residence, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal.
What investigators say they found wasn't an accident.
Deputy State Fire Marshals determined that Jennifer Mary Owen, 59, intentionally set fire to a personal item inside the home, officials said.

British actor and singer Tim Curry died late Tuesday, Aug. 25, at his Los Angeles home, TMZ first reported. He was 80. Police were called to the home late Tuesday, and no foul play was suspected, according to TMZ, which first reported the news.

Abused Dog Found With Open Wounds, Fly Infestation In New York: Authorities
A Long Island man was arrested after his dog was found infested with flies and suffering from open wounds, authorities said.
Cecilio Matthews, 50, of Bellport, was charged with several counts of animal cruelty under state and county laws, the Suffolk County SPCA said Wednesday, Aug. 26.
Investigators determined earlier in the month that Matthews had failed to care for his 10-year-old mutt, Seven, leaving the dog neglected in a yard, according to the SPCA.

Cordova resident Linda Laird, 62, was found guilty of her role in an elaborate scheme to abuse her position as the co-guardian and co-conservator of what prosecutors described as an 81-year-old vulnerable adult.
